Why Mavericks Is Named Mavericks

Mavericks is the surf break a half hour south of San Francisco, off Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay, where waves regularly clear sixty feet and have occasionally cleared eighty. It is one of the few legitimate big-wave spots in the world, the place professional surfers fly in for when the swell goes triple-overhead in January. There is no recreational version of it; you go big at Mavericks or you do not go at all.

That "go big or go home" framing is the entire design brief for this collection. CALI Laminate Mavericks runs 86-5/8 inch planks, over seven feet long, making it the longest plank in CALI's catalog and one of the longest in the broader laminate market. The wear surface is AC4-rated, meaning it is built for heavy residential and light commercial traffic; the core is a 14mm waterproof HDF with attached acoustic underlayment; the finish is a low-sheen NaturMatte that reads like real wood rather than like the high-gloss laminate of the early 2000s. Every spec on this floor is dialed past where mid-market laminate stops.

The reason that matters is that laminate, as a category, has fully reinvented itself in the past five years. The old objections (water damage, hollow underfoot, plasticky finishes, swelling at the joints) are objections to a product that does not really get made anymore at the premium tier. Mavericks is the proof of concept: a waterproof laminate that competes head-to-head with luxury vinyl on every meaningful spec while delivering a denser, quieter, more wood-like underfoot feel than vinyl plank can. It is the answer to homeowners who like the look of laminate but assumed they had to settle for vinyl to get the performance.

The decision, then, is the color. Below is every active color in the collection: eight floors, organized roughly from honey to blonde to tan to brown to dark brown. Each section covers what the color actually looks like in a real room, the design styles it suits, and the cabinetry and walls that pair with it.

CALI Laminate Mavericks · Tan

Half Moon Oak

9-7/16″ × 86-5/8″ plank · 14mm waterproof HDF core · AC4 commercial-grade · Attached acoustic underlayment

CALI Laminate Mavericks Half Moon Oak - warm tan 87" waterproof laminate plank in a sunlit modern coastal living room

Half Moon Oak is the warm-tan workhorse of the Mavericks collection - named after Half Moon Bay itself, and built like it. The color is a sandy, sun-faded oak that reads warm in any light without ever falling into yellow. The graining is soft and unhurried, with enough natural grain to feel genuine but never busy. This is the color that does the most work across the broadest range of interior styles: modern coastal, transitional, soft contemporary, even casual farmhouse.

Best For

Open-plan living rooms, sun-filled kitchens, and modern coastal homes that want everyday warmth without going honey or going gray.

Pairs Well With

Pairs with white shaker cabinetry, warm-stained oak trim, painted-sage and painted-navy millwork, brass and bronze fixtures, and the cream-and-linen palette that defines current coastal interiors.

CALI Laminate Mavericks · Tan

Pillar Point

9-7/16″ × 86-5/8″ plank · 14mm waterproof HDF core · AC4 commercial-grade · Attached acoustic underlayment

CALI Laminate Mavericks Pillar Point - weathered driftwood tan 87" waterproof laminate plank in a coastal living room

Pillar Point is named for the headland that shelters the Mavericks surf break, and the floor carries the same weathered, sea-bleached character. It runs a touch cooler than Half Moon Oak - a tan that has been worked over by sea air and sun - with enough visible grain to read as genuinely weathered rather than as flat beige. It is the kind of floor that makes a room feel lived-in from day one, which is the entire point of pulling a Mavericks color in the first place.

Best For

Coastal and California-modern interiors that want a slightly cooler, weathered tan with driftwood character.

Pairs Well With

Pairs with whitewashed wood, raw linen and natural-cotton upholstery, matte black fixtures, sea-glass blues and greens, and the beach-house palette that intentionally avoids anything too pristine.

CALI Laminate Mavericks · Blonde

Santa Cruz Sand

9-7/16″ × 86-5/8″ plank · 14mm waterproof HDF core · AC4 commercial-grade · Attached acoustic underlayment

CALI Laminate Mavericks Santa Cruz Sand - pale sandy blonde 87" waterproof laminate plank in a bright coastal kitchen

Santa Cruz Sand is the lighter half of the Mavericks line - a soft, warm blonde with the faintest sand-toned undertone. It is the color you pick when you want a pale floor without the cold, almost-white look that dated so much of the gray-blonde flooring of the last decade. The grain is restrained but legible, which lets the floor read as a quiet, airy backdrop rather than a busy focal point - particularly important across long planks, where heavy graining can start to compete with everything else in the room.

Best For

Bright coastal kitchens, beach houses, and Scandinavian-leaning interiors that want a pale floor with real wood character.

Pairs Well With

Works under white and bone painted millwork, light oak cabinetry, navy and sage accent walls, brushed nickel and brass fixtures, and the bright-but-warm palette that defines modern coastal and Cape Cod interiors.

CALI Laminate Mavericks · Honey

Harbor Honey

9-7/16″ × 86-5/8″ plank · 14mm waterproof HDF core · AC4 commercial-grade · Attached acoustic underlayment

CALI Laminate Mavericks Harbor Honey - warm honey oak 87" waterproof laminate plank in a sunlit transitional living room

Harbor Honey is the warm-honey center of the Mavericks line - a golden, amber-leaning oak with the kind of legible grain that reads as real wood at floor level. This is not the flat orange of 1990s strip oak. The graining carries real chromatic variation plank to plank, and the matte finish keeps the color reading as honey rather than as a high-gloss yellow. It is the floor that most homeowners default to once they put a sample down next to their existing cabinetry, because honey-oak works under almost every wall and trim color in current use.

Best For

Transitional kitchens, Craftsman and bungalow homes, and family rooms that want warm honey-oak character without anything orange or dated.

Pairs Well With

Pairs cleanly with painted-white cabinetry, warm-stained oak millwork, sage and clay walls, antique brass fixtures, and the warm transitional palette that has replaced the cool-gray decade.

CALI Laminate Mavericks · Honey

Capitola Caramel

9-7/16″ × 86-5/8″ plank · 14mm waterproof HDF core · AC4 commercial-grade · Attached acoustic underlayment

CALI Laminate Mavericks Capitola Caramel - caramel-toned 87" waterproof laminate plank in a mid-century modern living room

Capitola Caramel runs a step deeper and warmer than Harbor Honey - a saturated caramel-oak with visible grain and the kind of golden-brown depth that anchors a room without going dark. The matte finish keeps the color reading clean and modern; the long-plank format reinforces it. It is the Mavericks floor for interiors that want real warmth and chromatic presence, but are not ready to commit to a true dark-brown floor.

Best For

Mid-century-modern living rooms, warm contemporary interiors, and open-plan spaces that want richer caramel saturation than a standard honey oak.

Pairs Well With

Pairs with cream and bone walls, walnut and teak furniture, painted-sage or painted-clay millwork, oil-rubbed bronze fixtures, and the warm mid-century-modern palette currently driving most new builds on the West Coast.

CALI Laminate Mavericks · Warm Brown

Montara Oak

9-7/16″ × 86-5/8″ plank · 14mm waterproof HDF core · AC4 commercial-grade · Attached acoustic underlayment

CALI Laminate Mavericks Montara Oak - warm brown 87" waterproof laminate plank in a transitional family room

Montara Oak sits between the honeys and the dark browns - a clean, warm-brown oak with grain that reads tighter. It is the everyday-family-home floor in the Mavericks collection: warm enough to feel welcoming, restrained enough not to demand attention, and saturated enough to ground a room without the visual weight of a true dark floor. Across 87" planks, the moderate grain reads as quiet, continuous wood rather than as a busy pattern.

Best For

Transitional family rooms, warm contemporary interiors, and everyday homes that want a mid-brown anchor without going dark.

Pairs Well With

Pairs well with painted-white cabinetry, sage and olive walls, warm neutral upholstery, oil-rubbed bronze hardware, and the casual transitional palette most contemporary American homes are built around.

CALI Laminate Mavericks · Warm Brown

Sandalwood Surge

9-7/16″ × 86-5/8″ plank · 14mm waterproof HDF core · AC4 commercial-grade · Attached acoustic underlayment

CALI Laminate Mavericks Sandalwood Surge - deep warm brown 87" waterproof laminate plank in a rustic-modern living room

Sandalwood Surge is the warmer-leaning side of the brown end - a deep, sandalwood-toned oak with reddish-brown undertones and real chromatic depth. The grain carries lighter golden strands running through a richer base, which keeps the floor from ever flattening out under direct light. Across the long plank format, that variation has room to breathe; the floor reads as serious, layered wood rather than as a single flat color block.

Best For

Rustic-modern living rooms, mountain homes, and warm interiors that want a deeper, more saturated brown without losing the warmth.

Pairs Well With

Pairs cleanly with cream and bone walls, navy or forest-green cabinetry, leather furniture, antique brass, and the layered-rustic interiors that define mountain-modern and updated farmhouse design.

CALI Laminate Mavericks · Dark Brown

Mocha Del Mar

9-7/16″ × 86-5/8″ plank · 14mm waterproof HDF core · AC4 commercial-grade · Attached acoustic underlayment

CALI Laminate Mavericks Mocha Del Mar - deep dark brown 87" waterproof laminate plank in a contemporary living room

Mocha Del Mar is the darkest floor in the Mavericks line - a deep, saturated brown with real chromatic complexity. The grain carries lighter golden strands moving through a walnut-leaning base, which gives the floor the visual depth that flat-dark laminate from a decade ago never had. This is the floor for interiors that want the gravity of dark wood without losing the warmth that makes dark floors feel inviting rather than heavy. Across 87" planks, the depth gets the room it needs to read properly.

Best For

Statement rooms, dark-cabinet kitchens, and contemporary interiors that want serious chromatic depth without going black.

Pairs Well With

Pairs with cream and warm-white walls, brass and gold fixtures, jewel-toned upholstery, painted-navy or painted-green cabinetry, and the kind of considered, layered interiors that benefit from a dark anchor.

CALI Mavericks FAQ

The questions homeowners ask when picking a Mavericks floor.

Is CALI Mavericks worth it?

For homeowners doing a real renovation, yes. Mavericks sits at the top of the CALI Laminate range, and the spec sheet backs the positioning: AC4 commercial-grade abrasion rating, 14mm thickness, waterproof HDF core, attached acoustic underlayment, and the signature 86-5/8" (over seven foot) plank length. It is built to compete head-to-head with premium luxury vinyl, not to slot in below it. If you are renovating a primary residence and you want the look and underfoot feel that closer matches engineered hardwood than mid-market vinyl, Mavericks is the right tier of the laminate catalog to be shopping.

Why is the plank length such a big deal?

At 86-5/8", Mavericks planks are roughly 80 percent longer than the 48" laminate that defines the rest of the market. Every plank-to-plank end joint is a visual break and a moisture-stress point, and going from 4-foot planks to 7-foot planks cuts those joints by roughly a third across a finished floor. The result is fewer visible seams, longer continuous grain lines across rooms, and an installed floor that reads as more refined and more expensive than standard-length laminate - closer to the look of wide-plank engineered hardwood than to old-school strip flooring.

Is waterproof laminate really waterproof?

Modern waterproof laminate is a different product than the laminate of even five years ago. Mavericks uses a sealed, high-density fiberboard core that resists swelling, warping, and delamination when exposed to surface water and humidity - which is what made laminate's prior generation famously vulnerable in kitchens and bathrooms. CALI backs the line with a 72-hour waterproof warranty, meaning standing water on the surface for up to that long is covered. That puts it firmly in the same room-eligibility category as luxury vinyl: kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, basements, and the rest of the wet zones in a house are all on the table.

What does AC4 actually mean, and how is it different from AC3 or AC5?

AC rating is the European standard for laminate abrasion resistance - essentially how much foot traffic the wear surface can take before the design layer is worn through. AC3 is general residential. AC4 is heavy residential and light commercial, which covers high-traffic homes, rentals, small offices, and retail with moderate foot traffic. AC5 is full commercial, built for high-traffic public spaces. Mavericks runs AC4, which is the right rating for a primary-residence floor that needs to handle pets, kids, rolling chairs, and entryway traffic without scratching through to the print layer. It is the laminate equivalent of a 20 mil wear layer on luxury vinyl.

How does Mavericks compare with CALI's other laminate lines like Pacifica, Santa Cruz, and Shorebreak?

Mavericks is the top of the CALI Laminate range. The other lines slot in below it on plank length, core spec, or finish treatment - Pacifica and Santa Cruz Pier run shorter planks at lower price points, and Shorebreak sits as a mid-tier option. Mavericks is where CALI put the longest plank (over seven feet), the AC4 commercial-grade wear surface, the thickest core, and the most refined matte finish treatments. If your decision is between Mavericks and a lesser CALI laminate tier, the question is usually room size and how long you intend to live with the floor - bigger rooms and longer-term installs are the cases where the Mavericks spec earns its place.

Can I install Mavericks in a bathroom or kitchen?

Yes - kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, laundry rooms, and basements are all valid rooms for Mavericks. The 100 percent waterproof core and 72-hour surface-water warranty are specifically engineered for those wet-zone installs. The one practical note is that any floating floor benefits from a properly silicone-sealed perimeter in wet rooms, particularly around tubs, showers, and toilet flanges - that protects the subfloor from any water that might find its way past the surface, regardless of how waterproof the planks themselves are.

How is Mavericks installed?

Mavericks installs as a click-lock floating floor. Each plank locks into the next through CALI's tongue-and-groove milling, the planks rest on the attached acoustic underlayment, and the whole floor floats over the subfloor without being glued or nailed down. That means installation is faster than nail-down hardwood, the planks ship with their own underlayment built in (no separate underlayment purchase required), and the floor can be installed over most existing hard surfaces - concrete, plywood, tile, and existing vinyl - provided the subfloor is flat and dry within the manufacturer's tolerance.

What is the warranty on CALI Mavericks?

50-Year Residential and 15-Year Commercial. The residential warranty covers the design layer against wear-through and the core against waterproof failure for fifty years of normal use - which is among the longest warranties in the laminate category, and on the strong end of the broader hard-surface flooring market. Combined with the AC4 abrasion rating and waterproof core, the warranty backs up the positioning: this is a floor built to be lived on for decades, not replaced at the next renovation cycle.
